In a peaceful southern town in Alabama, Scout Finch is a six year old girl living with her older brother Jem and their widowed father, Atticus. Together with a young boy named Dill, the young children grow up in Maycomb and become fast friends. They have the troubles and concerns of all young children, such as their fascination and horror for the bogeyman.

However, their lives are soon morphed by when an African-American man is accused of raping a young white woman. The little town rises up in fury as their racist feelings are sparked by Atticus’ decision to defend the man. Their reaction and the events of the trial form the rest of the novel which has become a classic American novel noted for its literary significance and style.
